Dental Cleanings

Routine cleanings help keep your child’s smile bright and healthy by gently removing plaque, tartar, and stains while promoting great brushing habits at home.

Digital X-Rays

Our low-radiation digital X-rays provide safe, instant images that help us spot cavities and monitor your child’s oral development with precision and comfort.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent cavities, giving your child’s smile an added layer of protection during their regular dental visits.

BPA-Free Sealants

Sealants form a smooth, protective coating over the grooves of back teeth, blocking out bacteria and preventing decay—completely BPA-free for peace of mind.

White Fillings

(Mercury-Free)

We use safe, tooth-colored fillings made without mercury to restore teeth naturally, blending seamlessly with your child’s smile for lasting protection.

Pediatric Crowns

 (Stainless Steel)

When decay is extensive, pediatric crowns restore strength and function. Offered in durable stainless steel.

Baby Root Canals

(aka Pulpotomy)

These gentle procedures treat infection in baby teeth, relieving pain and preserving your child’s natural tooth until it’s ready to fall out naturally.

Tooth Extractions

If a tooth is too damaged or causing crowding, we perform careful, gentle extractions to protect your child’s comfort and support long-term oral health.

Space Maintainers

When a baby tooth is lost early, a space maintainer keeps neighboring teeth in place—helping permanent teeth grow in properly aligned positions.

WELCOME DR. SUNNIE

We are excited to announce that Pediatric Dentistry of Poughkeepsie is under new ownership with Dr. Sunnie leading the practice!

The practice is officially accepting DentaQuest insurance plans again! We're looking forward to welcoming back our amazing patients as we work on re-opening our schedule and return to full capacity.

See you soon!

COMMON QUESTIONS

Children's Dental FAQs

Curious about your child’s smile? Check out these quick answers to the questions we hear most from parents.

Start oral hygiene early by wiping gums with a moist washcloth. Once teeth appear, use a child-sized toothbrush and a rice-sized amount of toothpaste to keep new enamel healthy and cavity-free.

Our Buffalo team recommends the “First Tooth, First Birthday” milestone. Scheduling a visit by age one helps your child get comfortable with the dentist and allows us to monitor early development.

Pediatric dentists undergo two to three years of additional residency training beyond dental school. We specialize in the unique emotional and developmental needs of children, from toddlers to teens.

Decay occurs when sugary liquids like milk or juice sit on teeth for long periods. Avoid putting your baby to bed with a bottle, and always clean their teeth after their last feeding of the day.

While common in infants, prolonged thumb sucking can impact jaw alignment leading to “open bites” or speech issues.

We monitor your child’s dental arches at every checkup to ensure these habits aren’t affecting their growth, and can provide gentle strategies to help your child transition away from the habit.

We use sealants to “seal out” decay on permanent teeth. This quick, painless procedure creates a smooth surface on deeply pitted molars, making them much easier to keep clean with daily brushing.

If your child has pain, rinse the area with warm salt water and check for trapped food. If the ache persists or includes swelling, contact our Buffalo office immediately for an emergency exam.

Fluoride is nature’s cavity preventer. With Buffalo recently updating its water fluoridation, your child’s needs may have changed. We provide customized assessments to ensure they receive the right amount of fluoride for strong enamel.

Modern dental X-rays involve very low doses of radiation, making them very safe. They are a necessary diagnostic tool that allows us to catch small issues before they become painful or expensive problems for your child.

The “wiggly tooth” phase usually starts in kindergarten. Children typically begin losing primary teeth around age six, continuing until age 12.

If a tooth is lost prematurely due to injury, we may recommend a space maintainer to prevent future crowding.

If a permanent tooth is knocked out, handle it by the crown and place it in a container of milk. Contact us immediately; quick action within 30 minutes gives us the best chance to save the tooth.

Soothe a teething child with a cold (not frozen) teething ring or a clean, chilled washcloth. Avoid using medicated gels or teething tablets, as they are no longer recommended by pediatric experts.

Our office works with most major insurance providers and NYS Child Health Plus. We strive to make quality pediatric dentistry affordable for all Buffalo families by maximizing your available benefits.
